Charles Farley
Organist
Charles Farley grew up in a very small town in southwest Michigan. He attended Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo where he received B.A. and M.A. degrees in music. Following that he moved far south to do work on a Ph.D. in music at Florida State University in Tallahassee, receiving that degree in 1962. He taught music at Knox College in Galesburg, IL, for 38 years. In addition to this he was organist in Galesburg at several different churches, playing at FPC in Galesburg for 17 years. Charles met Beverly in Galesburg, and they were married in 1966. Upon retirement from teaching in 1997, the Farleys moved to Hilton Head Island and Charles became the organist of FPC/Hilton Head Island.
Beth Green
Director of Music Ministry for Children & Youth
Beth Green is a professional children’s music educator, teacher trainer, entertainer and CD recording artist who also serves as director for The School for Performing Arts. Beth also hosts musical enrichment/therapy programs at many schools and libraries and parent-accompanied, age-appropriate musical enrichment classes for parents and children ages 0-6 years. Additionally, Beth enjoys conducting teacher training seminars for preschool and child care teachers for their annual, state-required certification renewals and Continuing Education Units (CEU's). She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Dramatic Arts/Music and is a member of several professional musical education affiliations. Beth has received her AOSA graduate certification, continuing to progress toward her Master's Degree in Music Education. She is a member of FPC and has a son.
Carolyn McGarity
Business Administrator
Carolyn has a degree in accounting from Auburn University and is a CPA specializing in financial reporting and analysis. She has a diverse accounting background with experience in general ledger accounting and cash management, and has worked for large national corporations while living in Atlanta. Carolyn and her husband, Todd, who is in the home renovation business, have been married for 17 years and have two children. They moved to Hilton Head from Atlanta seven years ago. She works with the Finance Committee to monitor compliance with the church budget. Her duties also include financial accounting and reporting, payables and payroll.
Scott is a passionate
follower of Jesus Christ. He joins FPC following a 12-year career with the
Marriott Corporation, and has 14 years experience in property operations. He
was most recently Engineering Manager at a 255-villa Marriott Vacation Club
International resort, where he managed a staff of 12; prior to that he served
in a similar capacity at two other resorts. Scott and his wife, Jennifer, have
two children: a son and daughter. They have lived in the
Lowcountry for 10 years. He loves music and plays a number of instruments,
including guitar, drums, harp and bass guitar. Scott and his family attend Live
Oak Christian Church, where he is a member of the praise band. He has extensive
knowledge in all the trades, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC and
carpentry.
Originally from Indiana, Susan moved to Hilton Head Island upon graduation from Purdue University. Most of the Brannons’ married life has been spent on the island, although they lived for a little over a year in Vermont before the snow and cold motivated a move to Florida. Their son, Alex, was born during their two years there. They returned to Hilton Head Island in January, 1987. Susan and her husband, Bill, are active members at FPC and have a granddaughter.
The Tharin family moved to Hilton Head Island in 1994 from Agawam, MA. Jean, her husband, Pat, and daughters, Alicia and Stephanie, enjoy very much the climate and beautiful surroundings of the island. Jean has worked in the FPC nursery since September, 1995. In August, 1998, she had the opportunity to join the full-time staff as Membership Secretary. Jean enjoys the diversity of the position, including organizing and maintaining the church calendar, membership records, wedding and baptism arrangements, new member class preparation and other administrative duties.
Nancy Putnam is a native of Westchester, NY. She graduated from Centenary College and has spent the majority of her career working for both Wesray Capital Corporation and the Amelior Foundation, a not-for-profit private philanthropic organization dedicated to inner-city youth and most particularly those of Newark, NJ, as an executive administrative assistant. Prior to moving to Hilton Head Island she and her husband, Bill, called Morristown, NJ, their home. She has two grown children and a grandson.
Mary Hall has 25 years of experience in journalism and public relations and has lived on the island since 1982, moving to Hilton Head from Detroit. Previously she worked at FPC as the publications director, served as an elder at FPC and has been active in the community. Mary raised and trained guide dog puppies as a foster family for Southeastern Guide Dogs of Palmetto, FL. Along with church member Bill Olson, she is the co-founder of the Fifth Saturday Committee, a community outreach organization. She served on the steering committee of Chaplin Community Park and the Public Tennis, Inc. board of directors.
Edward Gray
Events Manager
Edward Gray is a native of the Lowcountry currently living in Ridgeland. He has been employed by FPC since 1993 and has become an invaluable resource for the congregation. His job includes acting as the point person and the hands-on manager of event setups, breakdowns and cleaning. This position is in addition to normal duties as a sexton. Edward has one daughter and enjoys fishing and old cars.
Anniel White
Housekeeper
Anniel is a native of Jamaica. She subsequently immigrated to England where she attended nursing school. She came to the United States in 1981 and began working at FPC in 1997. Since that time Anniel has become a truly valued employee of FPC. She also works at The Cypress and with Hospice of the Lowcountry. Anniel is married and has five children.
Gavin Harris
Sexton
Gavin was born and raised in Jamaica where he majored in business administration and computer science. He came to the States to pursue his education and accomplish his goals. He is a wonderful asset to the staff at FPC.
Sissy Jarrell
Director/First Presbyterian Day School
Sissy Jarrell grew up in Salisbury, NC, and graduated from Catawba College with a BA in elementary education. After teaching first grade in Elkin, NC, Sissy located to Hilton Head Island in June 1973 and began a career with the Beaufort County schools teaching kindergarten through third grade. She later received a Master's degree from the University of South Carolina in early childhood education and became certified in school administration. Sissy also served as an assistant principal at Hilton Head Elementary School and was the curriculum specialist for the Beaufort County School District for seven years. Sissy has attended many conferences and study programs, including a study tour in Reggio, Italy, to become more knowledgeable of the Reggio approach to early education.
Sissy is the proud mother of two daughters, Anna and Emma, and enjoys spending time with them. She has served two terms as an elder at First Presbyterian Church, as well as participated in many other church-related activities. When time allows, Sissy enjoys traveling, particularly in the United States, and loves quiet time on the beach.
